Entertaining in the Raw

Entertaining in the Raw

When you see this book it becomes clear why there is so much excitement and praise among raw foodies. Matthew Kenney has paved the way and taken raw food to new heights in his latest book Entertaining in the Raw. The recipes presented in this book are a stellar example of gourmet plant-based raw food.

I have had this incredible book in hand for a short time and each time I turn through its pages, I discover something new and intriguing from the superb mix of recipes. The visual presentation of each recipe is a feast for the eyes. If I had to choose one recipe… might as well forget about that, I plan to work my way through the entire book, one recipe at a time. Perhaps I’ll try the fortune cookies first (I was blown away when I spotted that recipe), or the eight-treasure rice, almond lavender pie in coconut macaroon crust, apricot “yogurt” cake, creamy mango pudding, sweet pea samosas, or the ginger date flan.

The chapters of this book have unique names: blossom, contemporary, inspiration, spice, radiance, revolution, and meaningful. Each chapter is outstanding but, it’s the contemporary chapter that I find most intriguing. Matthew takes the concept of art, intermingles it with food, and then brilliantly manifests it into a stunning meal.

Raw food deserves to shine like this and Entertaining in the Raw is a delicious and inspiring example of how a home or professional cook, raw or not, can transform nature’s bounty of plant food into an exquisite raw food meal.

On that note, it is my pleasure to offer one (1) copy of Entertaining in the Raw as a gift to one of my readers for two reasons. The first is I believe this book is a must have for any recipe library, and second it’s Raw Epicurean’s one year anniversary.

Simply leave a comment below on why you embrace or lean toward a plant-based lifestyle and you are eligible for the draw. On Tuesday, March 3rd, I will use my favorite random number generator to pick the lucky winner. I will contact the winning participant via email and post an announcement at the right sidebar, under the heading “Announcements”.

I am vegetarian to cultivate compassion.

  2. Sarah on February 28, 2009 Saturday, 4:22 am

I have been a vegan for over 3 years because
I never enjoyed eating animals and gave it up as soon as I realized the importance of it, both for compassion and for the planet. I have newly discovered RAW veganism, and I love it – to me it sounds like food magic – you take a few ingredients and combine them together for something amazing.

I was raised on a farm where I learned to love eating plants in any form. My favorite snack as a kid was to go out to the garden and eat raw onions that I would wash off in the creek.

I have been a vegan for two years and I can’t imagine what I was thinking before I made the transition. It turns my stomach to think that I used to eat Big Macs! Yet, even as a vegan, I never felt as healthy as I have since I began eating a mostly raw diet. I would say that I’m about 70% now and I feel better than ever.

  5. Christiane on February 28, 2009 Saturday, 9:25 am

To be honest, I have the raw diet a try just for fun and to challenge myself. But after doing it for awhile, I realized how much better I felt.
When I went back to eating a regular vegetarian diet, I felt such a dramatic change in my energy and overall wellbeing, I had to make the change.
Would love to win this book!

A plant-based (and gluten free) lifestyle has improved so many things in my life! I feel more balanced…and my energy levels, mental clarity, skin/complexion, and happiness are better than ever!! :)

“I plan to work my way through the entire book, one recipe at a time.”

That’s exactly what I’ve done with Matthew’s Everyday Raw. Sometimes, I just get out Raw Food Real World and stare at the pictures.

Why am I a plant-based convert? Because I feel infinitely better eating this way. I was so so sad when I ate SAD.

  8. shanti on February 28, 2009 Saturday, 2:46 pm

I’ve been vegan for fourteen years and have loved it the whole time- it feels very liberating to eat in a non-violent way, that is also optimal for the body and the planet.

  9. Char on February 28, 2009 Saturday, 6:31 pm

I embrace a plant-based diet because I feel better when I eat vibrant, living foods.

YES!!! I am stoked about Matthews new book. At the moment, I am vegetarian/mostly vegan but have been trying to go raw for a few months now. I am finally getting closer to it and for me personally, it is a spiritual connection. I defenitely know that the world brings to you what you give to it. I do not want to put out negative energy by harming other sentiment beings and our earth. I want to do all I can to feel good inside and only give and receive positive energy; this is way a plant based lifestyle inspires me.

For me, being a vegetarian is an integral part of living a healthy and fulfilling life. Paring that with a dedication to exercise to make a strong and incredibly capable body, and making smart and fun decisions in all other aspects of my life – well, it just helps me to love living even more!

  12. Steven on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 3:50 am

    This book would be fabulous!
I plan finally to be returning to having my very own garden this year after be away for too long!
    Great blog.

  13. Springfairy on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 3:55 am

Doctors told me I’d need to take medication for my depression all my life. I celebrate this March one year of living medication free because of raw food. yippeee!
I have Matthew’s two other books and they’re fantastic, I’d love to win this one, in Europe it won’t be available before late spring.

  14. Kate on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 9:28 am

Thanks for letting us know about this book. I have always been a strict vegetarian but when I need to detox and get in touch with my inner self, I go raw vegan. It’s the best way to cleanse my body and mind.

  15. Jason on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 11:10 am

I lean toward raw food as it is an exciting new way of looking at ourselves and the food we eat, and transforming both.

  16. Umm Nassim on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 11:23 am

Leaning toward a plant-based lifestyle has improved my health – needless to say that this has an increased impact on my overall well-being! Also, cooking becomes a new (positive) challenge again.

  17. lauren on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 2:12 pm

i am vegan for my health and for the health of the planet. i grew up eating a “healthy” diet, but what a difference from the way i live now! i never could have imagined how much there is to learn about how to be healthy…especially in a meat and dairy dependent (even brainwashing-ly so) society. but the more i learn the more i am attuned to what my body needs and how my choices resonate in the world. i am just trying to live as responsibly as possible.

  18. The Vegan Korean on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 2:25 pm

Well, I’ll probably get the book on my own, but to answer your question, I lean toward a plant-based lifestyle because it’s the best lifestyle out there. I leave a smaller footprint, I feel better, I look better, I perform better than when I was eating cheeseburgers for lunch.

Oh, and I’m almost 37 and a young kid of about 21 thought I was his age and wanted to go out with me. That’s one of the best compliments I can think of.

  19. debbie on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 3:36 pm

oh Ingrid, I just got my copy and OMG OMG OOOOMMM GGG
he is a genius, raw or not, just amazing stuff!
I will make some of the stuff too.. but not the same ones as you do.. we will have to share notes!
    love deb

  20. Maggie on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 5:17 pm

I just think the variety of flavors you get from fruits and vegetables is so much more varied compared to meats. There is always new flavors to taste.

  21. Kathleen on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 5:19 pm

    I’m not vegan.

    I should be.
If I look at my cholesterol, my weight,
my blood pressure….and my family history…

    It’s time to commit.

  22. Fiona on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 6:35 pm

First time here: Stunning site, beautiful photography and great information.

A raw plant based diet is not only healthy, removes oneself from the cycle of “processing” of animals – but is also a truly sensory and sensual experience.

Once a month I spend an entire day trying new recipes with ingredients I have never used before. Simply exhilarating!

  23. Mari on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 10:07 pm

Why you embrace or lean toward a plant-based lifestyle?
For me to avoid diseases that run in my family, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. I simply want to be healthy and fit…it makes me feel amazing :)

Ps. Happy Anniversary to Raw Epicurean

  24. gail on March 1, 2009 Sunday, 11:34 pm

    Happy Anniversary to Raw Epicurean!

I love that you do these fantastic giveaways to spread the raw food goodness and inspiration to others.

Personally, I lean towards a plant based lifestyle for health, sustainability, and the joy of eating delicious food.

  25. Tami Sojka on March 2, 2009 Monday, 6:24 am

I am vegan first because I don’t want to support the animal industry; I lean toward eating fresh, uncooked foods for health reasons.

  26. Stacy on March 2, 2009 Monday, 7:28 am

Besides tasting better :)…whenever I eat a plant-based meal, my body feels cleaner, lighter, and energized vs heavy, bloated, and sluggish. Having delicious recipes will make it even easier for me to continue to embrace this healthier lifestyle especially when I want something more than a simple salad :)
Thank you for graciously offering an opportunity to win Matthew Kenney’s new book!

  27. Courtney on March 2, 2009 Monday, 7:43 am

  30. Cheris Courtney on March 2, 2009 Monday, 11:23 am

I lean toward a plant-based lifestyle because it is most beneficial to me body. I noticed that when I committed myself to juice fasts (gotta get another juicer!), I have felt absolutely great and my body, my skin always would reflect this. The proof for me has been my experiences with it!

  31. karen yoder on March 2, 2009 Monday, 2:05 pm

I will be getting married soon, and have hopes of starting a family. As I’m taking this major step in my life I find myself being drawn more and more to the things that make our bodies healthier and happier. I believe that God has given us so many nutrients in the plants He has made and I want to take full advantage of this wonderful blessing for the rest of my life =)

  32. Angela Coate-Hermes on March 3, 2009 Tuesday, 8:27 pm

I first became enthralled with raw cuisine about 5 years ago after learning my husband had multiple food sensitivities. We can eat anything in almost any recipe from any raw food “cookbook” without having to worry about substitutions or allergic reactions. Now, I am vegan and have become so passionate about raw food that I just cannot stop thinking about it.
